A primeira pessoa que conheci, nesta minha viagem ao Perú, foi o Edwin. Ele é surfista e quando soube da minha pesquisa sobre projetos sociais, disse-em que não podia perder a oportunidade de ir conhecer o Proyeto Alto Perú, que trabalha com miúdos através do surf. Apesar de ter conhecimento de outros projetos na área, resolvi seguir a pista dada. Agendei uma visita, mas sem grandes expectativas, pensando que também não perdia nada em lá ir…

No último dia no país, literalmente a caminho do aeroporto, parei em Chorrillos, distrito fronteiriço de Miraflores. Apesar de não ser turístico, Chorrillos fica colado ao mar. É lindo! Os primeiros edifícios que vejo são bonitos e bem cuidados e fico com a ideia de que estou numa zona “chique”. No entanto, passando a primeira fileira de casas, apercebo-me que o cenário muda e que em tudo na vida, é bom não fazer julgamentos apressados. Ao fim da rua, dá início um morro repleto de habitações de construção mais precária.

A sede da organização fica perto da marginal, numa moradia bem cuidada. À chegada sou recebida pela Sílvia, uma rapariga simpática, que se apresenta como psicóloga estagiária. Explica-me que estamos em casa do Diego Villarán, a pessoa que deu origem ao Proyeto Alto Peru. O Diego é surfista e há aproximadamente 10 anos atrás, quando saía de casa com a sua prancha, alguns jovens do morro vizinho abordavam-no: “Diego, quando é que nos levas a surfar?”. 

A Sílvia explica-me que o contexto daquele distrito é delicado, grande parte da população trabalha na pesca ou actividades associadas, com condições económicas mais frágeis. O abandono escolar é elevado e há um grande número de crianças e jovens desocupados. Paralelamente, Chorrillos parece ser conhecido por ser um local de tráfico de droga, onde as pessoas vão comprar e consumir. 

Nesta altura chega a Beatriz, que se apresenta como irmã do Diego e que de forma apaixonada dá continuidade à história. 

O Diego resolveu um dia levá-los a surfar e apercebeu-se do impacto que essa experiência teve nos jovens e nele e decidiu começar a dar-lhes aulas. Inicialmente eram sobretudo adolescentes mas posteriormente começou a investir nas crianças mais novas. Amigos dele juntaram-se fazendo voluntariado e doando pranchas e fatos e as coisas foram crescendo. Posteriormente Victor Ccanto começou a dar aulas de muay thai e os miúdos adoraram. Começaram a surgir campeões e em 2015 conseguiram mesmo uma medalha de bronze no Campeonato Mundial da modalidade!!

A meio desta conversa chega a Xime que se junta a nós de forma discreta. É uma rapariga também muito afável e a Beatriz apresenta-a como a pedra basilar do projeto já que é ela que está em continuidade, a tempo inteiro. É arquitecta e a Beatriz descreve-a como alguém com grande sensibilidade e portanto muito versátil e pluridisciplinar. 

Contextualiza o valor que a Xime tem explicando que a zona é muito pobre e há pouca intervenção da polícia, deste modo, existem questões importantes relacionadas com a segurança. O que começaram a fazer foi uma intervenção de carácter mais urbanístico, apropriando-se de espaços degradados e criando pontos de luz. 

Com a população local, fizeram campanhas de limpeza, pintaram e repararam áreas.  Surgiu de imediato a preocupação de se apossarem dos espaços recuperados para que não fossem utilizados para fins ilícitos. Decidiram organizar o Festival Cultural Alto Perú para dar resposta a esta necessidade e, simultaneamente promover a integração e a interação social alargada.  

Mas o projeto não pára de crescer! A Beatriz é psicóloga com muita experiência de trabalho clínico e em intervenção precoce, mas é sobretudo uma mulher que transpira afecto. Resolveu dedicar parte do seu tempo a esta comunidade e sente-se o gosto que tem nisso. Hoje em dia, graças a um grupo de pessoas, o projeto tem também em pleno funcionamento um programa educativo, com workshops de promoção de competências sociais através do jogo, actividades culturais e acompanhamento pedagógico entre outras, já que são bem vindos todos aqueles que queiram contribuir de alguma forma. 

No meio disto tudo sou ainda apresentada ao Miguel, responsável pela parte financeira e que trabalha para garantir a sustentabilidade do trabalho desenvolvido. A organização tem uma estrutura muito pequenina e julgo que se constituiu para poder facilitar a captação de financiamentos.  De facto o Proyeto Alto do Peru nasceu de pessoas para pessoas. De alguém que resolveu dar algo de si de forma incondicional e acabou por receber muito sem estar à espera. A experiência só pode ter sido tão intensa que foi contagiante e, à semelhança desta minha visita, as pessoas foram-se juntando, de forma sentida e comprometida. Apaixonada!

Dou por mim com pena de não ficar, de não poder juntar-me ao grupo e, ao mesmo tempo, cheia de saudades do meu pessoal do Alto da Loba (em Portugal)…

E isto sim é intervir em comunidade! Trabalhar em comunitária é entregarmo-nos de alma e coração às pessoas e a postura técnica clássica é tão útil como um garfo para comer sopa.

The first person I met on this trip to Perú was Edwin. He is a surfer and when he knew about  my research on social projects, he said I could not miss the opportunity to go and meet the Proyeto Alto Perú, which works with kids through surf. Despite being aware of other projects in the area, I decided to follow the tip given. I scheduled a visit, without great expectations, thinking that I would lose nothing in going there ...

On the last day in the country, literally on the way to the airport, I stopped at Chorrillos, the frontier district of Miraflores. Although not touristy, Chorrillos is glued to the sea. It's beautiful! The first buildings I see are beautiful and well maintained and I get the idea that I am in a "chic" area. However, passing the first row of houses, I realize that the scenery changes and that like everything in life, it is good not to make hasty judgments. At the end of the street, begins a hill full of housing of more precarious construction.

The headquarters of the organization is near the marginal, in a well-kept house. On arrival I was greeted by Silvia, a nice girl, who presents herself as a trainee psychologist. She explains to me that we are at the home of Diego Villarán, the founding father of Alto Peru Project. Diego is a surfer and about 10 years ago, when he left home with his board, some young people from the neighboring hill approached him: "Diego, when are you taking us to surf?"

Silvia explains to me that the context of that district is delicate. A large part of the population works in fishing or associated activities, with weaker economic conditions. School drop-outs are high and there are large numbers of unoccupied children and young people. In parallel, Chorrillos seems to be known as a drug-trafficking site where people go to buy and consume.

At this point comes Beatriz, who introduces herself as Diego's sister and she gives continuity to the story passionately

One day Diego decided to take them to surf and realized the impact that experience had on the youngsters and himself. He settled to start teaching them. Initially they were mostly teenagers but later he began to invest in younger children. His friends joined in volunteering, donating boards and suits and things were growing. Later Victor Ccanto began teaching muay thai classes and the kids loved it. Champions started to emerge and in 2015 they even got a bronze medal in the World Championship of the sport !!

At the middle of this conversation, Xime arrived and joined us discretee. She is also a very affable girl and Beatriz presented her as the cornerstone of the project since she is the one who is in continuity, full time. She is an architect and Beatriz describes her as someone with great sensitivity and therefore very versatile and multidisciplinary.

She contextualizes the value that Xime has explaining that the zone is very poor and there is little intervention of the police, therefore there are important questions related to security. They began to do a urbanistic intervention, appropriating degraded spaces and creating points of light. 

With the local population, they cleaned, painted and repaired areas. Immediately the concern was to take possession of the recovered spaces so that they were not used for illicit purposes. They decided to organize the Festival Cultural Alto Perú to respond to this need and simultaneously promote integration and a broader social interaction.

But the project does not stop growing! Beatriz is a psychologist with a lot of experience in clinical work and early intervention, but above all a woman who transpires affection. She decided to dedicate part of her time to this community and I could feel the pleasure she has in it. 

Nowadays, thanks to a group of people, the project also has an educational program, with workshops to promote social skills through play, cultural activities and pedagogical accompaniment among others. Everyone is welcome to attend and contribute in some way.

In the middle of all this I am presented to Miguel, responsible for the financial part of the project and who works to ensure the sustainability of the work developed. The organization has a very small structure and I believe it was constituted in order to facilitate the collection of funds. In fact, the “Proyeto Alto Peru” was born from people to people. From someone who decided to give something of themselves unconditionally and ended up receiving a lot without expecting. The experience could only have been so intense that it was contagious and, like my visit, people were joining in a heartfelt and committed way. In love!

I felt sorry for not staying, for not being able to join the group and, at the same time, missing my folks from Alto da Loba (in Portugal) ...

And this is to intervene in the community! Working in community is giving ourselves soul and heart to people and the classical technical stance is as useful as a fork to eat a soup (reviewed by Ricardo Henriques).
