Portugal - Quinta do Outeiro - Aug 2017

English version

Since I remember existing, my summer vacations (even the shorter ones) passed by Quinta do Outeiro. It is said that in the 16th century it was a former convent of contemplative friars. It became part of the family patrimony in the early nineteenth century and nowadays belongs to my mother.
As the name indicates it is on a hill and has a privileged view on the Mondego river, scenery for our daily must-see program - the sunset.

Coming here in August is literally a family program. My brother and sisters, my uncles, my cousins and now their respective children, we all gather around a small swimming pool and the conversations keep going on, following the flavour of the day and the Figueira "breeze".
This year, it was especially interesting for me to notice how these conversations are being replaced generationally and the changes that are taking place. It's true, we're all getting older ...

But for me, to go there is also to be in the countryside and to do outdoor activities. I love it! And although I usually do not have company (the rest of the people seem to have more important things to do), I enjoy these moments with particular pleasure.
I like to breathe deeply and listen to the sounds of crickets, the buzz of insects and the chirping of birds. Goshawks, storks, flamingos, swallows and many more, this is a privileged area for those who are fond of birdwatching.
I'm also delighted to go picking some fruit! Peaches, lemons, apples and pears are what you can pick now, but in other seasons it amuses me to pick oranges, pomegranates, walnuts and sour cherries.

The beauty of this house is due mainly to Lena and Quim, the couple who looks after this property all year. You can guess the love they put on it, such is the care with which the land presents itself.
This year I had the privilege of accompanying Quim in the milking of goats and, as I like to try everything, to verify that the activity requires technique and training. It is from the milk of these goats that Lena makes absolutely delicious cheeses.

I also went with my niece Madalena to pick blackberries to make a tart.
This wild fruit requires some care when we pick it up, and it is impossible to not get scratched. Still a very entertaining program, with Madalena telling me where the best ones are (warning me she cannot reach them) and eating a lot of them before reaching the container. On the way home we picked some figs and Madalena also picked some apples that served to enrich the said idealized pie (made under the guidance of my mother, who is a professional in these proceedings).

I have a special complicity with this niece, whom I like very, very much. She is not particularly fond of walks, but when I challenged her to go do some tree-climbing at Figueira da Foz, she immediately answered yes, without any hesitation.
On my last day, I went with her to Parque Aventura, where the two of us worked out for a good 3 hours, trying to tackle the 6 available tracks.
Through laughter and taunts we were fulfilling the challenges, although we have to confess the last track was not completed. I struggled so hard that even hanging upside down I was 😛. Still, I could not even climb the tree, using the available rope ladder. You can guess the nonsense, right?
And it was knackered and with an impressive appetite that we returned home (reviewed by Graça Braga).
