English version

My brother, my sister-in-law, niece and nephew returned to Colombia this Friday. For one month and a half I was with them in an intense way, almost daily, very worried about enjoying their presence, which I’m only in once a year.

I was not closed at home. I went and accompanied them to different parties and family gatherings, both on the maternal and paternal side, in places also connected with  family.

It was as if my life in this period was a train journey that unfolded in two rhythms: the one inside the carriage and the perception of the speed when we look out the window.

This for me is not of minor importance. Occasionally I talk about time because it really affects the way I live my life and yesterday I think I had the insight to understand why.

The pleasure of wanting to be with them (my brother and family) is affected by the fact that I know they are leaving in a short time. I step from experiencing pleasure to craving. In this change I enter into a more or less avid state, anticipating the inevitable separation. I lose consciousness of what is going on and what I want or wish. The concern seems to be reduced to wanting to be with them, wavering between a spiral of feelings and thoughts that are not always concordant. In this reduction of consciousness of what I want, I cease to be in the "now". I think too much, I feel intensely, but I'm not there.

It wasn't by chance that I stayed with them with immense pleasure on the beach until 10:30 p.m. fishing on their last night. Between sets of drawings in the sand and the attending to the tips of the fishing rods, the sunset offered a magnificent color palette over a sea whipped by the gusts of wind and the sound of the breaking of the waves.

I was there until the end, to accompany the catch of five fish, which were eaten by just my brother and me. Little talk and so much peace…

Friday when I left them at the airport, I left there weeping with a feeling of emptiness and sadness. I know enough to know that goodbyes are not easy for me so I decided to go for a hike with my American friend, Kasey.

I went to meet her after lunch, on a hot day everywhere except in Sintra. I started to climb up from Malveira da Serra toward Ulgueira. Dark sky, clouds and cold... the temperature difference was absolutely incredible!

We made a change of plans and opted to take a beautiful walk between Guincho and Praia da Grota. Despite the strong wind, we had strong sun and a pleasant temperature along our hike. The landscape seemed to us an installation of art. Coastal plants and shrubs (like juniper), brimming with berries, scattered pieces of burnt wood, seemingly positioned carefully. Later we caught sight of a massive dried out pine tree, some of it totally burned by the sun. It was probably from here that other wood we had seen came from, scattered by the wind.
We finished the day with a delicious dinner, a colorful vegetarian meal that was a discovery of tastes and textures that I am not used to. So good!

It is true, I have sought to understand what it is that helps me to be aware, present. Clearly, fishing, hiking or traveling are all ways that allow me to do it. There are no escapes. They are strategies for seeking an encounter with myself, with life and, consequently, with others (reviewed by Kasey Kinsella).
