Espanha - Madrid with David - May 2017

A área é colorida, concentrando restaurantes, tabernas e esplanadas.

Transmite muita tranquilidade.

No dia seguinte esperava-me regressar a Lisboa.

English version

I felt that I started my weekend in Madrid when I met David, on Friday at the end of the day, next to the lglesia subway.
David is a nice Madrilenian guy, very inspiring for the way he lives life, aware of the importance of enjoying it to the marrow. It isn't easy to  communicate with him from a distance (he is not at the service of telecommunications), but in person he is so much fun! Possessing a keen sense of humor and a great sensitivity, he could not be a better companion 😊
I promised him not to speak well of Madrid, but I do not know if I can ...

While we were chatting, David was showing me his city. We went towards the Plaza Olavide, from there to Plaza 2 de Mayo and walked trough the neighborhood of Malasaña.

The area is colorful, concentrating restaurants, taverns and terraces. The streets and squares are packed with people (of all ages) and there is a vibrant energy in the air! We decided to stop here and ate a few “pinchos” with some “cañas”. The atmosphere was festive and we really have to speak loud if we want to make ourselves heard!
From there, passing by Gran Via, we went to Chueca, another very lively neighborhood, also full of bars. As in Lisbon, Madrid has several old markets that have become important social spaces. We ended up having a glass of wine at Mercado de San Antón and I really enjoyed the place.

David was very sweet and the next day, despite feeling kind of sick, he took me for a ride in the city.
Madrid is hot at night and very hot by day 😜

We went to an extraordinary site - the temple of Debod - a palace offered by Egypt to Spain, for the help given in the construction of an important dam. For me, that place is magical! It conveys great tranquility. From there we can see the Casa do Campo and the South of Madrid. It was there that I ended up buying a ring that a craftsman made me on the spot, and since then, I haven't taken it off.

We continued our walk and crossed the Sabatini Gardens, passed by the Palacio de la Opera, the Statues of the Kings Godos, the Calle de Ballen, the Plaza Mayor and the famous San Ginés cholocate shop. On the way, David gave me a taste of palulú - sweet chopsticks to chew, a children's treat from the time of the war.

The city was in a party atmosphere, since it was the final of the King's Cup. The streets were full of supporters who were already singing and celebrating, a few hours before the game.
We stopped at the Mercado de San Miguel to eat "tapas" and then headed towards the Almudena Cathedral. I was impressed when I knew that it had only recently been completed in 1993.
From there we passed the ancient walls of Madrid and the Royal Palace.

We finished the day on a long walk in Madrid Rio, an area that has recently been renovated. I believe it has required and continues to demand a large investment from the Spanish, but the area is very beautiful and the city has gained a very interesting leisure space (with at least 15 km).
It integrates landscaped spaces, restoration and more! In fact, my childish side forced me to go on a swing, to slide and to try to balance myself on wooden structures.😉
It was great fun and it was already very late when we got home.
I assume I needed to sleep.

The next day, after a late breakfast, I laughed out loud trying to help my host put pillowcases on a couch.
After the housework, David continued our visit showing me the Atocha area, the Queen Sofia museum, the train station (which concentrates the largest number of turtles I've ever seen in my life!). And finally the site that I liked the most: the Parque El Retiro.
Absolutely wonderful, with its gardens, full of trees, a giant lake where it is possible to go boating, the Crystal Palace, contemporary art exhibitions, the book fair… anyway, I loved it!

Upon our return, we passed the Jerónimos Church and the Prado Museum. We ended up again in the Atocha area to have dinner at a restaurant with food from Ecuador and we ate so well that I almost made the final decision on the destination for the next trip.

The next day I was expected to return to Lisbon. It was my intention to go to the Prado Museum and then go to the airport, but I woke up with the news of the loss of a very dear uncle and I had no disposition for that anymore. I said goodbye to David and decided to enjoy the beauty and tranquility of the Botanical Gardens, confident that I would soon return to the Spanish capital (reviewed by Graça Braga).
