Espanha - Madrid / Fundación ABD - May 2017

Começava a sentir-me realmente embrenhada no espírito da cidade.

English version

Until recently, Madrid did not arouse much curiosity in me. I was used to hear that it is a city without anything special, except for parties. Little more than: good to go out at night. I must confess that the fact that I did not have access to the sea there, somehow it removed Madrid from my priorities.
However (and still in the wake of the Camino de Santiago), I got the possibility of going there, to have some meetings and to visit one of my fellow walkers, David.

I flew on Thursday morning from Lisboa and arrived at noon at the Barajas’s airport. I had a meeting that afternoon at the headquarters of the Fundacion Acción Bienestar y Desarrollo (ABD) and it was easy enough to get there.
Madrid is a very large city but is also served by a giant subway, currently with about 12 lines. I do not even know if buses are really necessary, such is the size of the underground!

I went to the area of Gregorio Marañon and found myself struck by the size of the buildings.
I chose a place to have lunch, trying to observe and realize what was going on around me. The movement was not much different from the working days of Lisboa. People rushed to eat. Those who were alone stared at the phone or into the void and the waiters ran fast, with time for nothing. Consciously, I tried to do everything slowly.

After lunch, and under a dry heat, I decided to go to the Sorolla Museum, the old family home of the painter Joaquin Sorolla. The house is beautiful and I was amazed by the works and pieces I saw. It is not by chance that he is called the "Painter of Light", the light portrayed in his paintings is truly ecstatic.

From there I went to the Support Center for Families managed by Fundación ABD, where I was received by the directress, Sílvia Garrrigos.
This organization emerged in the 1980s in the field of drug addiction. Currently, its mission is the management of programs focused on people and communities to promote and strengthen their autonomy and coexistence with efficacy, ethics, quality and proven sustainability.
For two and a half hours, I had the opportunity to visit the space, to understand its history, how it works, what kind of answers it has and what kind of goals it pursues. Fundación ABD has programs that span beyond the area of drugs: poverty and inclusion, childhood, family and gender, dependency and the elderly, and intellectual disability. I was surprised how they are organized.

The NGOs that develop work in the city, work closely with the Ayutamiento and the way of working is very particular, different from the one I know in the Portuguese context. I found it very interesting.
But in fact, what really pleased and fascinated me, is that the foundation makes a clear commitment to social innovation and internationalization, taking into account the involvement of its employees, users and community, in the discussion and development of new answers. It was music to my ears!
Sílvia was indescribably kind. She introduced me to Cláudia Ribeiro, a very nice Portuguese psychologist who is also working there. She scheduled a meeting for the next day with the Foundation's Delegate in Madrid, who could give me more concrete information about what were they doing in these areas.

The afternoon was already long. I was very happy with the knowledge I acquired and the information I gathered. I said goodbye and went leisurely to a bar near the subway of Iglesia to drink a beer, before going to catch up my friend to the Plaza de España. I was beginning to really feel the spirit of the city.
I met David literally under the statue of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza, in the centre of the grandiose plaza.
It's hard to explain the pleasure it gives me to meet someone I've met on a trip, in another context ... It is as if that person carries that time with her/him.
It was with a heartfelt hug that we greeted each other and pulled off to the Santo Domingo area, for a night of "pinchos", "cañas" and lots of chat😊 (reviewed by Maria João Venâncio)
