Thailand - Social Projects in Koh Lanta - Lanta Animal Welfare

For a English version please scroll down

Fica no caminho para a Old Town.

Recomendo vivamente a visita à página!

English version

Before even coming to Koh Lanta I tried to look for social projects taking place on the island or possibilities of workaway (volunteering, in exchange of accommodations).
It wasn’t easy to find anything at all and I thought it would be easier when I would arrived on the island, but it wasn’t. The information collected previously was confirmed on the spot.
The island does not seem to have any major organizations / projects, with the exception of Lanta Animal Welfare and the Asa Lanta permaculture project.
I decided to go on motorbike for a ride to explore them better.
Asa Lanta is a permaculture project centered on holistic education. It works as an alternative to the conventional education system and it privileges learning through doing. It's on the way to Old Town.
I went there and I talked to the couple that manages the project - Anke and Oi (I think she is Dutch and he is Thai). However they were departing for some weeks in Bangkok so the project wasn’t working at that moment. I felt sorry for not having the opportunity to see how it works, since the principles seem to me very interesting.
Then I headed north to the Long Beach area in search of the Lanta Animal Welfare – a non-profit organization which aims to relieve the suffering and pain of Koh Lanta’s animals through sterilization and local care initiatives. It helps the community by making the island a healthier and safer place to live.
It is an organization with a strong international character as it was founded by animal lovers foreigners impressed by some situations they encountered in Thailand.
Lanta Animal Welfare looks very well organized and offers guided tours every day between 9am and 5pm. It has being sponsored from some German clinics and had a strong support from the TripAvisor, who recommends their visit as one of the activities not to miss in Koh Lanta.
And in fact it's awesome! In addition to animal sterilization and primary care, they function as a dog shelter (up to 50, at this point 47) and cats (I can not remember how many, but also an impressive amount of them).
They accept volunteers, to walk and take care of the animals, with availability to collaborate between 1 and 3 months. At the moment they count with the assistance of 5 veterinarians, however this number is not fixed.
But it is possible to support in other ways. In addition to donations, the organization invites the adoption and sponsorship of animals, which can also be done online.
You can also help by volunteering as a flight volunteer. Basically, the task is to ensure the follow-up of an animal that has been adopted, to its future owners. If you are flying or stop at one of the destinations where adoptive owners live, you can be volunteer.
It is consensually the most well-known and prominent organization in Koh Lanta. In this matter, it gives support to the south of Thailand.
I believe that the success of Lanta Animal Welfare is also connected to the fact that they are available to receive civil society and to explain what they do. Also they offer many different forms of people be involved and participate. I highly recommend the visit their site!
In conversation with Elara (American lady, very good people, companion of “Papa” Jack), she also talked about the existence of a project to clean beaches and collect plastic, promoted by a company through its social responsibility. The management of waste and the issue of plastic waste is a problem everywhere but usually glaring on any island.
I have not been able to figure out exactly how this project works here in Koh Lanta, because it seems to be very recent and insufficiently communicated, but maybe I get lucky soon.
Still, I know that there is so much to do in this area that I do not have to wait for any very organized initiative to make my contribution. I just need to follow the example of a Belgian couple who have been coming to this island for years, and every day in the morning they walk to Kantiang Bay with a large garbage bag, picking up all the plastic and glass they find 😊
